August 2013 Regatta

100_2663Oak Hollow Sailing Club held its August 2013 Regatta today under rainy skies and average winds of 9 to 10 mph. We had twelve member families present, five of whom decided to race in the rainy and gusty conditions. Andy Squint, Art Hudgins, and Tom Kirkman handled Race Committee duties, and Connie Sloan provided our morning refreshments. Thank you to those volunteers!
We were pleased to have several guests, all of whom decided to crew during the races. David Roletter and his daughter, Abby, came to visit us from Winston-Salem, member David Jones brought two Young Life members from High Point, Charles and Mack, and member Mike DuPont sailed with his daughter, Kristin, from Ohio, and one of his work colleagues, Sharon Harwood, from England.
We were able to complete three races with only a moderate amount of showers. Congratulations to race winners Michael Nordahl and his crew, Charles, who won Races 1 and 2, and to Paul Walter, with crew Stepanie and Abby who won Race 3. Times and results are attached.

Thanks to all who braved the elements.

Nancy Valego

Oak Hollow Sailing Club’s Vice-Commodore, Nancy Valego, passed away on Saturday morning, July 27, 2013. (link above to her obituary, which includes funeral arrangements)
Nancy has been a lifelong member of the sailing club, having been a past Commodore, and most recently as Vice-Commodore responsible for education and training. She loved the club and has been a mentor to many new members over the years, and has been the club’s primary resource for rules, regattas, handicapping and teaching the sport, AND Nancy sailing “Blue Chips” was always the boat to beat. We have lost a great friend and sailor.

July Regatta

100_3136Oak Hollow Sailing Club held its July 2013 Regatta on Saturday, July 20th, with 20 members present, and 16 boats sailing. Race committee duties were handled by Chuck Eldred, Linda Marsh, John Fulcher, and Steve McLeod. Connie Sloan provided morning refreshments. Thank you very much ladies and gentlemen for your volunteer work!
Winds ranged from 4 to about 8 mph for all three races, with occasional higher gusts. Congratulations to Phil Andrews for winning all three races. Also, Michael Nordahl and Minnie had three top three finishes, and Tait and Leslie Humphries had two top three finishes. Andy and Kirsten Squint ran an excellent first race in their Hobie 18, finishing third. ( Just six seconds of handicap-adjusted time separated second, third and fourth places in Race 1).
Whitney DuPont, a rising high school senior at Northern High School in Greensboro, has made “learning to sail” her summer senior project, and she has had several training sessions this summer on a Sunfish with an instructor prior to today’s regatta. She bravely decided to race in the regatta with this being her first experience sailing the Sunfish by herself. She completed both races which she started, and successfully righted her boat on several capsizes, and assisted another capsized sailor at one point. Congratulations, Whitney! This was a very good sailing learning experience for you today!
Thanks!

July Regatta

DSCF4427Reminder to all OHSC Members:

This Saturday, July 20th, is our July Regatta. Captains’ Meeting at 10:30. All boats planning to participate should be rigged and ready to sail BEFORE the meeting.

Race Committee will be handled by Linda Marsh, John Fulcher, and Chuck Eldred. Refreshments to be provided by Connie. Thank you ladies and gentlemen!

Forecast conditions (as of Tuesday’s long range forecast) are expected to be 9 to 10 mph winds, with a high of 89 – just about perfect for a July racing day! We have a few new member boats in the fleet since our June regatta, and we hope to see them on the water. Carl and Lois Simmons transported their 19′ Lightning from Maine, Gene Eldred has added a 14′ Hobie catamaran to his fleet, and Tom Kirkman picked up a 14′ WETA trimaran yesterday (to add to his fleet of trimarans). All three of these are fast boats, and it will be fun to have them in the regattas with us. (We haven’t found a handicap rating for Jerry’s new “baby catamaran”, so he will likely be sailing his Aquacat in the regatta).

The Sunfish has been rented for the regatta (Whitney DuPont), but for any member wanting to captain a boat, the 15′ Harpoon is available to rent for $25. It is in great condition, and sails beautifully. Let me know if you are interested in renting it.

Hoping to see a big turnout on Saturday!

Thanks,
Paul Walter
