August Regatta Recap

IMGP1324Oak Hollow Sailing Club held its August 2016 Regatta on Saturday, August 20th, with 30 members present for the event.

Race Committee PRO was handled by Tom Kirkman, with RC volunteers Gary Gooden, Les Eger, Art Hudgins, Mike DuPont, and Orin Sadler.  Thank you gentlemen for organizing us, setting the course, and handling the scoring.

It was a very light wind day, with the forecast for winds to improve slightly by noon. The first race was scheduled for about 11:45 a.m., with 11 boats headed out for the start. Two captains elected not to start the race due to the very light air, with nine others making the decision to start.  Unfortunately, the forecast for improved winds did not happen, and only six boats were able to complete the course, with three DNF’s.  Congratulations to the top three captains and their crew who managed to get the most out of the little wind that we had: after handicap scoring was calculated (Beaufort 1 winds) Dan Shuee and Anthony Paraino finished first, Roger Bates was second, and there was a tie for third between Gene Eldred (crew Ben) and Mike Vitamvas (crew Gail). As winds had died to below 1 knot, further races were abandoned.  Thanks to RC for towing in a few of our boats to get them out of the doldrums.

Handicap scoring and final race results are HERE.

Women on the Water Sailing Instructions and more….

image1Sailing isn’t just a sport; it’s a life-changing experience that builds self confidence, leadership skills, and strength.  Women on the Water kicked off in early 2016 to get more women involved on the water.  This program was designed for women of varying abilities to sail in a relaxed environment and build their knowledge within the group.  Training included classroom and on the water experience.

On Sunday, September 11th, the sailors will converge at Lake Townsend Yacht Club for a fun filled day on the water while putting their Skipper skills to the test.  Will they be able to read those inland lake wind shifts and come out to play with the boys during the rest of the season?  Stay tuned…time will tell.

OHSC August Regatta

IMGP1295Oak Hollow Sailing Club is holding its August 2016 Regatta this Saturday, August 20, 2016, at Sailing Point, 3700 Waterview Rd., High Point, NC 27265.

We are hoping for temperatures to fall off a few degrees from where they have been the past few weeks, so come out and enjoy the day with us.  We welcome guest sailors to sail with us.

Boats should be rigged and in the water BEFORE the Captain’s Meeting, at 10:30 a.m.  We have just three regular season regattas remaining, so OHSC members should keep that in mind as our 2016 Scoring Guidelines require that a captain sail in at least three regattas in order to be eligible for year-end awards.

We look forward to a great day of sailing and fellowship! Please indicate your intentions to sail, or volunteer, on the google document found at the link below (you will need to select the August 20th tab at the bottom of the spread sheet):
