Boat rigging and launching: 9:30 a.m (or earlier) to 10:30 a.m.

First Race: 11:30 a.m.

To all OHSC Members and guests:
Saturday marks the official “Opening Day” for our 2014 Sailing Season, and what a tremendous response we are having from our members and others who are hearing about our club! If the weather forecast holds, we are expecting between 15 and 20 boats for our first regatta of the season, which is three times more than we usually have in April. What a start!

Race Committee duties are being handled by Tait or Leslie Humphries, and new members Steven and Sandra Boul. Mike and Marie Schram are providing refreshments. Also anyone who is attending is welcome to bring some snack or drink items, as we are going to have a great turnout.

The current forecast for Saturday (which has been waffling back and forth between Partly Sunny and Showers) is showing Partly Sunny with winds (during race hours) of 6 to 9 mph, with gusts into double digits. Water temperature should be around 60 degrees.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL HAVE SHELTER #6, WHICH IS ON THE TOP OF THE HILL BACK IN THE WOODS (for this event only, and then for our future events we will be in Shelter #5 near the dock).

We are going to make every effort to get all of our guests who want to participate onto a boat, with our new members getting first opportunity. To all boat captains, if you are going to need crew, please let me know, so that I can begin finding boats for those who want to sail.

For any members who have sailing experience and need a boat, the club’s Sunfish will be available to rent for $25 for the day. We expect the Harpoon 4.6 will be committed in order to accommodate one or two of our guests.

See you all on Saturday morning!

Sincerely,

Paul Walter

OHSC 2014 Event dates

100_2663As in years past, our OHSC regattas will be held on the 3rd Saturday of the month beginning in April, and in each month through October.  This year OHSC hosts the Inter-club Regatta with Lake Townsend, which has been scheduled for Saturday, November 8.
Saturdays from August 23 through October 4 will be scheduled for High Point University Sailing Class instruction (the HPU students will join us for our September 20th regatta).
We have added some new events to the calendar for 2014 as follow:
Friday, May 9 through Sunday May 11:  camp and sail at Jordan Lake
(Sundays after our regattas) May 18*,  June 22, July 20, August 17: Training days for ourselves and for new members
* May 18th is also Community Fun Day, open to the public to introduce ourselves and the sport of sailing to all who are interested.
We plan to hold some informal social events throughout the year, but they have not been pre-scheduled.  We will advise everyone as to time and place when those are set up.
Our year-end banquet will be held on November 22.
We look forward to winter’s end and another excellent season of sailing, teaching, and fellowship!
Sincerely,
Paul Walter (for OHSC Board of Directors)

Oak Hollow Sailing Club Winter Update 2014

100_2663To all members:
It won’t be long until the club begins its 2014 Season activities, and for some of you, you have stayed busy working on your boats, doing some winter sailing. and maybe like me, looking at boats online and dreaming of warmer sailing destinations.
Here is a brief summary of some club matters that are in process, or have already taken place during the off-season:
1. Our Second-Vice Commodore  (in charge of education), Melissa Palmer, and her family are moving to Clayton, NC, very soon.  Melissa has been with the club for many years and has been club secretary, sailing teacher, sailor, and friend.  She purchased Nancy Valego’s “Blue Chips” Hobie 1 last year after Nancy passed away, and she was elected Second Vice-Commodore at our November banquet.  Melissa will stay involved with the club, as she is able, but it was felt by her and the board that due to the importance of the position (HPU teaching and overall member education) we should appoint someone local.  We are very pleased that Andy Squint indicated an interest in the position, and this past week Andy was officially appointed by the board (in a unanimous vote) to fill the position of Second Vice-Commodore for 2014.  Thank you for stepping forward, Andy!
2. We have also heard from Carl Simmons about his interest in helping with the HPU classes – thanks, Carl!  For any other members who want to be involved in the HPU instruction, please let Andy or me know.  This is an important activity for the club and requires more than just one or two members to make it successful.  We will begin planning for it sometime in the spring.
3. We met with the of High Point Assistant City Manager, the Parks and Recreation Department Director, the Special Facilities Director (over lakes), and the new Marina Supervisor, Lamar Lee, a few weeks ago, to update the club’s working relationship with the City.  The meeting went very well, and the City of High Point is VERY supportive of our club, which was very nice to hear considering some past friction and issues we have had in the past at the marina. We have submitted a written “Memorandum of Understanding” to the City with proposed language that outlines our co-sponsorship agreement with the City, and we are awaiting their response.
4. One big change (we think for the better) involves our boat storage at the North Marina. The City has told us we can continue to store our boats there for free, as long as each member storing his boat pays a $75 annual (unlimited) launch pass and signs a waiver of liability. Furthermore, if you have an annual launch pass you will be permitted to call the marina before you sail, and give them your pass number over the phone.  This will register you for the day, without having to sail across the lake to pay.  This will be a BIG improvement for us. If all this is officially improved I will send out more details, as we did last year about the Boat Storage Guidelines. We expect to continue to have free launches on race days, but if you don’t have an annual pass you will have to pay and register in person at the marina on non-regatta days.
5. The club’s board and officers will be meeting a month earlier than normal (February instead of March) in order to get ourselves organized for the year and to discuss our goals for the season. At this point, unless the board makes a change, we will begin our regattas in April, and we expect to hold them on the third Saturday of the month, as in the past. The board has also set up the Sundays following regattas as “Training Days” for new members, and/or for ourselves.  These will be scheduled from May through August.
6. We would like to see 2014 be another year of excellent growth for the club.  To make that happen we have to “spread the word” about sailing, and about our club. I hope each of you will be a spokesperson for OHSC.  One of my goals continues to be that we will see “20 or more of our member boats” sailing in a single regular season regatta – we are getting close!
Looking forward to seeing you all very soon!
Sincerely,
Paul Walter

October 2013 Pumpkin Regatta

1378179_589865341061668_1308541190_nOak Hollow Sailing Club held its final regular season regatta on Saturday, October 19th, under cloudy skies and light winds. 25 members participated in the activities, with 13 boats sailing in at least one of the three races.
Thank you to Connie Sloan for her wonderful baked goods, coffee and refreshments prior to the races, and to the Eldreds for organizing the “Pumpkin Race” details. Race Committee duties were handled by Michael Nordahl, Phil Andrews and Joe Holder – thanks guys! Thanks to Tom Kirkman for providing the race committee with his “patented” floating clipboard with water proof time sheets. (Race results have been known to blow into the lake before).
Congratulations to race winners Dave Heap (our guest with the very beautiful wooden British-built (National 12 ?)), Warren Mitchell and Ken Irgen, and Melissa Palmer and Rosalie Austin who won the “Pumpkin Race”. Great sailing, ladies and gentlemen!
Thanks to all for a great final club regatta for 2013! Let’s begin preparations for the Inter-Club on November 9th at Lake Townsend, and don’t forget the Camp and Sail next weekend at Jordan Lake!

OHSC October 19th Regatta – Pumpkin Race

great-pumpkinOur final regatta of the year on October 19th, will have an added element to it:
Before returning to the dock following the final race, there will be pumpkins with each captain’s name (or an assigned number) floating in an area on the lake – each boat should find and retrieve its pumpkin, and we will have a pumpkin carving contest back on shore.
On the day of the regatta please bring with you whatever pumpkin carving tools and decorations you will require to design your orange masterpieces.
The finished jack-o-lanterns will be scored on original design between 1 and 10 by all participants to determine a winner.
