OHSC July Regatta

OHSC-4.pngSaturday, July 18th is our Second Annual “Blue Chips” Charity Regatta, to benefit cancer research in memory of Nancy Valego. Nancy was a founding and lifetime member of the club who passed away two years ago. For many of our new members who did not know Nancy, her service to the club resulted in our ongoing commitment to teaching sailing. She was responsible for establishing OHSC as the educators for High Point University’s sailing class. That teaching arrangement has provided the club with the opportunity to keep our dues affordable, and keeps us in an ideal position to share our love and knowledge of sailing with young people who may make it a lifelong hobby. What better way to promote our sport!
The club’s board, when establishing this event, also decided to make it a charitable event, by requesting donations toward cancer research as an entrance fee. Checks can be made payable to a local cancer research organization, the “Susan G Komen Foundation” so you will have a receipt of your donation. Regatta t-shirts will be sold with proceeds contributed to cancer research as well.
In order to plan appropriately for breakfast and lunch, please sign up on the scratch sheet below and include your t-shirt size too. If you do not plan to race but will attend, please sign up on the bottom of the scratch sheet with your t-shirt size. Under “Boat”, list NONE so that you can be included in our head count. Volunteers, please list your shirt size, S-XXL next to your name.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Looking forward to seeing you for this worthy cause!

OHSC June Regatta

100_3973OHSC held its most recent regatta on Saturday, June 20th with a turnout of approximately 44 in attendance even though we had a lot of Skippers out of town. We had much higher winds than usual (12-20mph with gusts in mid 20’s) for those 15 boats who sailed.  RC was busy handling 4-5 capsizes.

Thank you to Carrie and Billy Clemmer who provided morning refreshments along with Dari Starkey for handling apparel sales.  The entire RC team did a stellar job and should be commended!  Thanks to Eddie Sawyer and Carl Simmons for coordinating RC.  Joe Holder, Les Eger, Caleb Thompson, Chris Malcolm and John Whiting handled race committee duties.

Congratulations to Spencer Sherrill who won Race 1 and got two second place finishes. Also, congratulations to Race 2 winner, Andy Squint.  After only five boats sailed in the final race, Tom Kirkman won Race 3.

May 2015 Regatta

100_4135OHSC had a beautiful day for our May regatta, with a turnout of approximately 33 in attendance including three guests, Bruce and Sally Leigh along with son Eric. Bruce and Sally were at our Open House this week and will officially become new members. The winds varied greatly for the 12 boats that sailed. One even got caught in a vortex. Ask Art Martz about that at our next social!
Thank you to Linda Shuee who provided morning refreshments along with new member Teri DeCurtis for handling apparel sales with Rosalie Austin. Teri also went out on the RC boat for the duration of the regatta to capture action photos.
Joe O’Sullivan was our PRO and will be missed greatly when he moves out of state in June to live near family. Joe as our First Vice Commodore embraced this position and has made great strides with Race Committee procedures and organization this season. Thank you for all your efforts! Thanks to Kim Walker, Mike Schram, Dan Shuee and Henry Dorn for handling race committee duties. During our Skipper’s meeting, Andy Squint and Phil Andrews reviewed overlapping rules.
We had some consistent results yesterday. Phil Andrews took first place in all three races, Tait And Leslie Humphries took second place and new member, Eddie Sawyer third place.
